Even though most people want to jump right on the piano, it's important to know the instrument first. There are various forms of pianos out there that can range from large, heavy, or even tall vertical upright pianos. They hit somewhere around 36-51 inches tall. When you sit on your stool, there will be a music rack that allows you to place your sheet music on it. There are various styles that range from ones that fold down or possibly slide into a slot. When it's time to play just place your sheet music there. Obviously you will be sitting on some sort of bench that allows you to reach the keys at any part of the piano. Be careful though, if you sit too far or too close, you might not be able to reach them all.

There will be pedals at the bottom of the piano where your feet are. These need not be used by beginners. Once you become more proficient at playing the piano, you can learn how to use these pedals to sustain sounds or cut them short.

The part of the piano that will be most important to your learning is the keyboard. It is made up of white and black keys which run from the left to the right of the piano face. These keys do not alternate white-black-white for the entire length of the keyboard.

Seriously take a look at them. There is a consistent pattern where there are 7 white keys and 5 black keys. An interval can be performed at the beginning of one set and ending on the beginning of the next set. This is the musical distance between 2 sounds that are better known as an octave.

The keys are lined up on the keyboard in order from the lowest on the left to the highest on the right. Starting at the left and moving to the right, each black or white key is a half step higher in pitch than the key before it. For a full step, it is necessary to go up (or down) two half steps. Try some half steps and some full steps. With a little practice, you should be able to learn the sound of those intervals easily.

It's recommended that you try other intervals just to hear different sounds. Take a look at the amount of half or full steps you might be taking. Basically just pick out a key and play the next key up in the same position. Eventually you will be able to play those octaves with no problems at all. Remember, this is one of the keys to piano playing.

What Are Piano Scales?

To talk about scales, you must talk about keys. There are two kinds of keys when you are learning to play the piano. There are the physical blocks of ivory, or some look-alike material, and wood. There are also keys that scales or songs are played in.

If you have ever spent any time in a lounge or piano bar and hear a singer take the stage and address the pianist with "let's go with the key of D", then you might have been confused by his or her statement. What they are telling the pianist is that they would like to start with chords that start with the D key. They then know exactly where they need to begin to play their music. If a chord in a wrong key is played it can drastically affect the overall sound of the song.

When you are learning scales, you can do it without learning all the key signatures. (Key signatures are the written notation of the keys, such as the key of C or the key of G.) You can begin by playing a C scale. A major C scale is all done on the white keys. Begin with your right hand in the Home Keys position. Remember that your fingers are numbered 1-5, with the thumb being 1.

Press the keys and listen to the sounds of the one two three keys being played. You have now heard the sounds of you playing the C D E chord. Rather than going on to the next finger, place your thumb under your other fingers and continue with your thumb hitting the fourth key in the row, or the F key. Let your fingers flow from there to complete the scale with the final note being keyed by your pinkie finger. When you are finished you can pat yourself on the back as you have completed the complete scale by pressing the keys in order, 1-2-3-1-2-3-4-5 (otherwise known as C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C. Continue to practice this so you can play it fluently.

After you are comfortable with the C scale on your right hand, move on to mastering it with your left hand. Rest your pinkie finger on the C key that is below middle C. Your fingers should be mentally numbered from one to five beginning with the pinkie finger. Play the keys as 5-4-3-2-1. After you have completed this step, use your middle finger to reach across the other fingers and put it on the next available key. Play 3-2-1 beginning at this location on the keyboard. When you put it all together you are playing 5-4-3-2-1-3-2-1, otherwise known as C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C.

Once you have taken some time to practice playing the C scale with each hand separately, try to combine them and play them at the same time. Hit the C below the middle C key with your left pinkie and the middle C with your thumb on your left hand. Travel up the scale using both hands. You may find it a bit challenging since you will have to maneuver the middle finger on your left hand over top while you are moving your thumb on the right hand underneath and at different times as well. You will find that as you practice the function becomes much more doable.

Once you get the basic procedure down, it is easy to play other major scales. The only thing you have to remember is the sequence of steps and half steps in a major scale. The correct order up a major scale is: beginning note-step-step-half step-step-step-step-half step. You should be aware that, since there are no black keys between them, the intervals from B-C and from E-F are each half steps.

You can play a scale anywhere on the piano. Just pick a note to start on. It does not matter whether it is a white key or a black key. Use the given sequence of steps and half steps to go from there up an eight note scale. You can even start from the left of the keyboard and continue the scale all the way to the right. Understanding Sheet Music

I've tried to put together a very brief article explain how to interpret sheet music. There isn't too much information to learn, but synthesizing it in real-time can be quite a challenge. To make this easier to understand, I've put together some drawings, this will make it much easier to understand what I'm talking about. Sheet music figures.

First we'll take a look at the first section of music, where you'll get information about the whole piece. Notice the two numbers stacked on each other? This is the time signature, the top number is the number of beats in the measure. The bottom number tells you which type of note counts as one beat. For example 3/2 time shows you that there are three beats per measure and a half note gets a beat.

Along with the clef, you may see a collection of sharp signs or flat signs. This is the key signature. Seeing a flat sign on a space, for example, literally means to play the flat every time you see a note on that space. The whole collection gives you some idea of which key you're playing in, for example 2 sharps is D-major or B-minor, and 3-flats is A-flat major or F-minor.

Now on to the music itself, each figure you see communicates two pieces of information: pitch and duration. You can tell the pitch from the line or the space on which the note sits. In the bass clef, from bottom up, spaces are ACEG and lines are GBDFA. In the treble clef the spaces are FACE and the lines are EGBDF. Notice that they go in alphabetical order if you write in every letter.

Those names that we just discussed are the names of the white keys on a piano. If you see the sharp or flat sign, then you'll need to play the next higher black note (for a sharp) or the next lower black note (for a flat). If there is no adjacent black note, play the next white one. For example, B-flat is also C. Remember that if sharps and flats appear in the key signature, then every occurrence is raised or lowered.

The other piece of information you get is the duration of each note, you can tell this from the shape. Remember that you know which note is a single beat from the key signature. In 4/4 time it's the quarter note. The half note gets two beats, and the whole note gets four. Similarly, Eighth and Sixteenth notes get half and quarter beats respectively.
